Personality: As Aladdin himself would say, there is much more to him than simply his frugal background. He’s very easygoing and has a generally positive outlook on life, even under the most negative circumstances. Living as an orphan on the outskirts of Agrabah, he never lost hope that someday his life would get better. His time there taught him how to take care of himself and survive. He doesn’t depend on anyone else for anything, and at times he can be a very guarded person, even around his closest friends. He doesn’t divulge his thoughts unless he’s speaking with someone he really trusts. This can sometimes be seen as rude, although he is simply uncomfortable with discussing his thoughts so openly sometimes because frankly until recently no one has ever cared.
Aladdin has several positive traits that earn him the title of the diamond in the rough. Firstly he is very compassionate towards other people. Even when he was suffering of hunger himself, he didn’t hesitate to give the piece of bread he’d stolen for breakfast to two young street urchins who were digging through the trash one morning. He’s always willing to help others in need, even if it puts himself in danger. That being said, Aladdin is extremely courageous, and in trying situations stays calm and works tirelessly to find a solution to the problem. He’s very clever, having outwitted the city of Agrabah’s guards day after day for the past thirteen years. He’s very resourceful and street smart, and has an excellent sense of direction. He’s very observant, and from years of living on the streets he’s learned to watch his surroundings for danger.
His greatest weakness is his stubbornness. At certain times he will not budge from his own opinion. He also is quick to give orders, and although he can be a very good leader, sometimes he has trouble trusting in other people ideas rather than his own. This is a result of having to rely on himself for so long. He can also be very reckless, especially when someone he cares about is in danger. He won’t hesitate to put his life on the line without thinking things through. Another one of his weaknesses is a lack of confidence in himself at times. Even after saving Agrabah from Jafar, the people continue to see him as a street rat. He’s been used to the name for nearly all his life, and although he tries to ignore it, it still hurts.
He’s very charming and can be quite a smooth talker. He’s an expert at talking his way out of trouble, and although he’s ashamed to admit it, he is an excellent liar. He’s quick to think up excuses and stories ( although very believable ) if he needs to.
History: Aladdin was born into poverty and never knew what it was like to live in comfort until adulthood. His father, Cassim, left when he was still a baby to seek out the legendary Hand of Midas, hoping to support his small family with the riches it would bring. However, Cassim did not return, and Aladdin never knew his father. He was raised by his mother Alimah, and though they were both happy, they barely managed to scrape by with the little money they had. Alimah would often give up her food to feed her son. When Aladdin was five, he went into his mother’s room to find her asleep. He shook her a few times, but to his despair she never awoke. She had perished from starvation from the constant sacrifice she made for her son.
For the remainder of his youth, Aladdin lived as a thief. He developed excellent thieving skills, rivaled by none in the city, and gave the palace guards quite a hard time. However, never once did they catch him. One day a circus of entertainers—Aziz, Minos, and Fatima—came to town, accompanied by a thieving little monkey named Abu. Abu and Aladdin fought over a bag of coins they’d both set their sights on, and after that fateful day became inseparable.
It was when Aladdin was seventeen years old that he first met Princess Jasmine. Of course he didn’t know it at the time, to him she was just a beautiful girl he’d rescued from losing a hand for stealing an apple from Faruk’s fruit stand. He led her to his hovel and they were about to kiss when the palace guards barged in on them. “Do you trust me?” he had demanded desperately. When she answered affirmatively he grabbed her hand and jumped out the window. By some twist of fate they’d managed to survive the jump, but Aladdin was still caught by the guards. It was then that Jasmine revealed her true identity, and at this Aladdin was horrified. As he was dragged away to the dungeon despite the Princess’s protests, he couldn’t help but lose hope of ever getting Jasmine to fall for a ‘street rat.’
The Royal Vizier, Jafar, disguised as a beggar, helped Aladdin escape from the dungeon in return for his help. He was to enter the mysterious Cave of Wonders and bring back a worthless ( or so Aladdin thought ) old lamp. Aladdin agreed to this partly because he wanted to get out, as well as the fact that he could somehow impress Jasmine with all the treasures Jafar had said were in the Cave. Inside he found riches, even though he was forbidden to touch them, as well as a Magic Carpet, who led the way to the lamp. However, as Aladdin picked it up, Abu the kleptomaniac snatched a gem. He yelled out in warning but it was too late. The Cave began to shake and rumble as rocks tumbled down from above. The water that had submerged the Cave turned to lava, and it was only with Carpet’s help that Aladdin and Abu survived. However, they were still trapped thanks to Jafar’s treachery. Luckily, Abu was able to steal back the lamp.
Inside the lamp was a legendary Genie, who upon rubbing the lamp, would grant the holder three wishes. After tricking the Genie into getting them out of the Cave, Aladdin wished to become a Prince so that he could have a shot at getting Jasmine to fall for him. He reentered Agrabah riding atop an elephant ( who just happened to be Abu, transformed ) followed by a parade. Unfortunately, none of this impressed Jasmine. After several failed attempts at wooing her, he asked her to accompany him on a Magic Carpet ride. He asked her if she trusted him again, and once she affirmed this, they flew off into the night. By the time the ride ended, Jasmine had realized that he was the man who saved her the previous day, but Aladdin lied once more, saying that he was indeed a prince, but he just enjoyed going out into the marketplace dressed as a commoner. They ended the night with a kiss, and Aladdin couldn’t help but think that his life was going perfectly.
Unfortunately that perfection ended once Jafar tossed him in the ocean. He passed out but still managed to rub the lamp, and Genie used Aladdin’s second wish to save his life. After confronting Jafar back at the palace, Aladdin reunited with Jasmine and it was announced that they’d be wed and he’d be the next Sultan. The prospect of ruling the city frightened him, and he went back on a promise he’d initially made to free Genie from the lamp. However, this backfired, as Iago ( Jafar’s pet parrot ) stole the lamp and gave it to his master. Jafar wasted no time in wishing to be Sultan and the world’s most powerful sorcerer, and used his newfound power to reveal Aladdin’s true identity. The ashamed young man had intended on telling Jasmine earlier, but he wasn’t given a chance to apologize as Jafar whisked him off to the ends of the earth.
With Carpet’s help, Aladdin returned to Agrabah to face Jafar a second time. After his friends had been incapacitated, he used his wits to defeat the magician by convincing him that only by becoming a genie could he truly experience true power. Jafar made his final wish, and Aladdin sealed him in his lamp. He used his third wish to free Genie, and the Sultan changed the law that had barred Jasmine from marrying a commoner.
After defeating Jafar a second time, and squaring off against the likes of Mozenrath, Mirage, and other enemies of Agrabah, Aladdin wed his Princess. Their first attempt at a wedding had been interrupted by none other than Cassim, and after a series of unpleasant events he managed to track down his father and find out exactly why he left. Establishing a previously non-existent relationship with him gave him to courage to take the big step of building a new life with Jasmine.
Family: Jasmine ( Wife ), Cassim ( Father ), Mozenrath ( Possible brother--though it depends on whoever takes him )
Friends: Jasmine, Abu, Genie, Iago, Carpet, Sadira
Enemies: Jafar, Nasira, Sal'uk ( Presumably deceased ), Mozenrath, Mirage
